With the last of his trusted companions having fallen, Drizzt is alone - and free - for the first time in almost a hundred years. Guilt mingles with relief, leaving Drizzt uniquely vulnerable to the persuasions of his newest companion Dahlia, a darkly alluring elf and the only other member of their party to survive the cataclysm at Mount Hotenow.

But traveling with Dahlia is challenging in more ways than one. As the two companions seek revenge on the one responsible for leveling Neverwinter - and nearly Luskan as well - Drizzt finds his usual moral certainty swept away by her unconventional views. Forced to see the dark deeds that the common man may be driven to by circumstance, Drizzt begins to find himself on the wrong side of the law in an effort to protect those the law has failed. Making new enemies, as his old enemies acquire deadly allies, Drizzt and Dahlia quickly find themselves embroiled in battle - a state he's coming to enjoy a little too much.

Neverwinter Legend of Drizzt Neverwinter Saga Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) R A Salvatore Victor Bevine Audible Studios Books

This book is the second in this mini-series or arch of the over-arching Drizzt novels. I'm re-reading the series from where I left off and this book and the one before it are new material for me. I like getting to see a change in the status quo. In the last book, we get to see Gauntlgrym, which has been talked about for ever. I'm a sucker for characters discovering old treasure troves of magic and secret fortresses. I like seeing them work it all out and incorporating it. Cattie-Brie finds Taulmaril in Mithril Hall when they first discover it. You get to see a lot of that in Terry Goodkind's 'Sword of Truth' series when Richard Rahl explores the wizard's keep. Plenty of other books have similar ideas and I love them all.

There are a couple of problems I have with this book, but nothing I'd skip reading it over. For instance, I mentioned in my review of the previous book that I don't like what Drizzt has become. If you're reading this review, then I don't think it'll be a spoiler, but Drizzt isn't really acting like a good person anymore. I know they gave reasons as to why. He's lost people and runs into grey areas instead of clearly seeing black-and-white and being able to do something about it, but I don't like how he's becoming more callous and acting more like Artemis Entreri did.

The other thing I didn't care for was the predictability that was in this book. There was plenty of stuff that I didn't see coming, so it was enjoyable to read, but some of it was so predictable. I'm not going to spoil anything, but if you've read it, I think you'll guess what I'm alluding to. There were two really big ones that I saw coming from a mile away. One is that we finally get confirmation of the true identity of a certain character that any of us should have recognized. I'm not sure why the author even bothered disguising said character. The second is a character you'll meet called 'Effron'. I figured out who he was and where he'll probably fit in the story about 3 seconds after meeting him. You don't find out by the end of the second book. I'm fixing to start the 3rd book, 'Charon's Claw', so maybe it'll be confirmed there.

Either way, this is still a solid book and I recommend it to fantasy and Drizzt fans alike.

Neverwinter Legend of Drizzt Neverwinter Saga Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) R A Salvatore Victor Bevine Audible Studios Books Reviews

This book is okay. I only read to keep up with the main character, Drizzt. But, his best stories ended in the Hunter's Blades trilogy. Although, The orc King was pretty good. All of the usual fighting scenes are brilliant in this book. I didn't like the notion of the dread rings. It was boring. I don't like Dahlia and I think she is bad character. Not in an I love to hate her way. Her character is just bad and I don't think our protagonist would associate with her. The name Herzgo Alegni is a terrible name. Sounds ore like a wanna be Italian gangster name.

I do like that Artemis is finally reintroduced. I do like the introduction of the little weasel, Effron. Though, I cannot wait to read about him being killed, along with Dahlia. I do like that Sylora Salm is killed. I hope.

I had to force myself to finish this book, and dread I'll have to do the same for the next two. I was hoping to learn more about Neverwinter, but the city is only a sideline to the plot. Which is okay I guess. But I expected a book called Neverwinter to be somewhat about that city, Rather, this story takes place completely outside the city. All we know is that some guy named Grinch (another poor name) accepts whomever seems strong to abide wit his Neverwinter citizens. The truth should be that Neverwinter is a ruin, like Pompeii. People should not even live there. But they do, for some reason, despite the complete destruction by a volcano!

Anyway, this book is okay. Read if you play any of the RPG action and want some kind of vague background.
Neverwinter, the second book in R. A. Salvatore's Neverwinter series, picks up where Gauntlgrym left off. The last of Drizzt's old companions are gone. King Bruenor fell in battle as he worked to stave off another great cataclysm. Now for the first time in a century Drizzt is free. He is no longer tied down by anyone. Now he is traveling with the deadly female elf warrior Dahlia. First they travel to Waterdeep to try and find some trace of Jarlaxle. While they are unable to locate the mercenary Drow they are able to run into a great deal of trouble. Old enemies of Dahlia attack them and they are forced from the city. Next they travel to the woods outside Neverwinter. Here they have come to do battle against the evil Sylora Salm. Before the novel is over Drizzt and Dahlia will be forced to deal with Sylora, the lich Valindra Shadowmantle, who is slowly regaining her sanity, and they will have to deal with the killer known as Barrabus. Meanwhile Barrabus is operating in Neverwinter. A great secret will be revealed concerning this mysterious killer.

Neverwinter is a good book. It is a major step for Drizzt. Now that he is free of his friends, and dealing in a world that is descending deeper in to chaos Drizzt needs more than ever to find something good to cling to. He will be hard pressed to find the goodness in Dahlia. She is constantly pushing him to let loose. The battle of ideas is Drizzt's idealism against Dahlia's pragmatic view. There is a lot of new thematic material appearing here. Drizzt is growing and being challenged. How will he cope with this new world and will he stand strong or give in to the ways of the world. All of that and so much more in this amazing fantasy novel. As always, lot of action and adventure in the Forgotten Realms.
I love this series. It's written from the perspective of someone who clearly loves playing D&D and the story unfolds much like a great campaign. It's a bit character-centric (the main character Drizz't is a bit of a 'mary sue' type) but otherwise it's full of interesting characters, plots, action, and adventure. Perfect for ages 13+ and anyone who loves adventure.
